Twenty years of forest loss, pixel by pixel.
Since 2001, the University of Maryland has detected every loss of tree cover in the Landsat archives, at 30-metre resolution. In green, the forest as of 2000; in pink, what has vanished since. Around the Lama classified forest as on park edges, the nibbling is plain to see.

From alert to inventory
Detection
The Hansen/UMD algorithm compares Landsat images year over year and flags every 30 m pixel whose tree cover disappears — clearing, fire, logging.
Quantification
Global Forest Watch aggregates these losses by territory and by year: an objective baseline for forest policy, carbon projects and certifications.
